Making solid wood clock wheels using circumferential and radial wood grain orientation to minimize the chance of having the wheel split or distort due to climatic changes.

In a discussion regarding how to make a wood gear using segmented wood it was thought the best combination would be the use of circumferential grain orientation in the rim area where the teeth are, as this would minimize the seasonal dimensional changes in the circumferential direction. And using radial grain orientation in the spokes to minimize changed in the length of the spokes due to seasonal changes.

The combination of the C & R wood grain orientation would result in a gear or wheel with the best chance of remaining stable dimensionally and having the best chance of not warping or splitting.
