Mechanical Float Switch - How It Works

A ball operated mechanical float switch to replace the older mercury switches. Works in any position. The steel ball must jump over a ridge before it can operate a spring-loaded tipping point mechanism thus providing quick motion for opening and closing the contacts avoiding arcing at the points. This snap-over mechanism works very similar to toggle switches, including the wall light switches in every home. This float switch failed when the seal between the can and the wire failed after only 5 years. Failure was a split in the plastic possibly due to low-grade material and insufficient thickness.
